Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Week one of the 2011 legislative session included the swearing in of state lawmakers, addresses by Governor Chris Gregoire and Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Barbara Madsen, and other ceremonial activities. It's now time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.
I am happy to report I have been appointed to the following House committees: Ways and Means; Business and Financial Services; and Higher Education, where I am the assistant ranking Republican. I am also honored to again serve on the House Republican leadership team as assistant floor leader, the fifth ranking position in our caucus, in which I help direct our members as we debate legislation on House floor.
In response to many of your ideas, I have set out my goals for this legislative session. They are to: fundamentally strengthen our economy; balance our state budget without raising taxes; and reform state government. Whether it is proposing solutions to prioritize state government in Ways and Means, or finding ways to alleviate burdens on employers in Business and Financial Services, my committee assignments offer me opportunities to work on issues that are important to our communities.
I will continue to send regular e-mail updates from Olympia throughout the legislative session to keep you informed on the business of the Legislature. If you know anyone who might enjoy receiving these updates, please direct them to this link and have them select “Join.”
In closing, I want to invite you to a community forum I will be co-hosting this Saturday with Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich entitled “Understanding threats in our community.” The event will last an hour and allow residents to express their views and concerns on the recent bomb found in Spokane and the tragic event in Tucson, Arizona. The details are below. I hope you can attend and help spread the word.
