Veterans’ burials bill signed into law today

Rep. Kevin Parker, R-Spokane, looked on today as the governor signed Senate Bill 5481 into law. Parker sponsored the House companion to the bill.

The new law protects funeral homes from liability so they can transfer unclaimed veterans' remains to the Department of Veterans Affairs for a final and honorable military burial.

The 6th District lawmaker said he was pleased to see the policy become law that he has worked on since before he took office.

“It's very gratifying to help bring further honor and respect to those who made sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy in this country,” Parker said. “Passing this bill was important to me not only because I am so grateful for what our armed forces do for us, but also because it is right that we honor and recognize them.”

The new law goes into effect July of this year.
